- | "To connect a non-Commodore printer directly to
- | your C128/64, you will need an RS232 cable. I use
- | Super Graphics Jr. manufactured by Xetec, but I
- | don't think these interfaces are being manufactured
- | anymore.
- |
- I assume you meant "parallel printer interface", not "RS232 cable"
- (which would only be useful if you were using a printer with an RS-232
- serial interface).
-
- CMD sells the MW-350 printer interface, as does Software Support
- International. Of course, the prices are $44.95 and $49.00, respectively,
- close to the price one will pay for a decent used 9-pin printer.
- (Speaking of which, I've got a Panasonic 1091i for sale in that price
- range if anyone needs one).

- | "I also have a KXP1080i, ribbons for it has been
- | costing me about $10 each. Unless I'm just buying
- | my ribbons in the wrong place, I doubt that new
- | ribbons cost $2 each."
- |
- You've been buying your ribbons at the wrong place. Browse through an
- issue of Computer Shopper and you will find several places that sell
- ribbons for the 1081i for closer to $2 each than $10. However, price
- is not everything, as my next paragraph illustrates.
-
- For $10 each, I at least hope you are getting authentic Panasonic
- brand ribbons. We found out at work, back before we replaced the e-claim
- printer at work (a Panasonic 2023) with a Okidata OL400e that the
- "bargain" ribbons we purchased were used up in a little more than a day.
- When those ran out, we purchased a few Panasonic brand ribbons...and
- the first one lasted almost 3 weeks, meaning it would have had to have
- cost us about 20x as much to have come close to actually being more
- expensive. In fact, I seem to recall the Panasonic ribbon cost 3-4x as
- much as the bargain ribbons we had purchased.
-
- Of course, if you do not print very many pages per day, it would no
- doubt be difficult to log just how many pages you get from a certain
- ribbon, and a significant amount of the ribbon's deterioration
- possibly be to drying while sitting exposed and unused in the printer.
-
- IMHO, for those with a MPS-803 or older Commodore printer that do not
- want to, or cannot afford to invest in a parallel printer interface and
- standard Centronics interface printer, keep your eyes out for a Okidata
- 120, Star NX1000C, MPS-1000, MPS-1200 or other better quality Commodore
- ready printer offered at a good price (especially the MPS-1xx0 series,
- which offered both parallel and Commodore interfaces).
